from: Now! to: president@umbc.edu, Now! date: Sep 29, 2024, 12:19 PM subject: October 7 Dear President Ashby, I was saddened to learn about an anti-Semitic incident involving UMBC Jewish students last weekend. As we approach the first anniversary of the October 7 Hamas massacre many around the world prepare to remember and express their sympathy for the victims. I'm sure that joining the upcoming events will help UMBC overcome the alarming surge of antisemitism on college campuses. In a heartwarming show of solidarity, Berlin's iconic Brandenburg Gate was illuminated in the colors of the Israeli flag right after the deadly October 7 attack by Hamas on Israel. A clip (http://www.what-in.store/231007/doc/710_2024_09_19-ANGLIT.mp4) that tells a brief story of some of the victims is available for free distribution. Displaying the clip for a day on UMBC large outdoor screens will be a great way to honor the memory of the victims, and provide the UMBC community with much-needed visual education. As you know Hamas targeted individuals from over 40 different nationalities during its attacks in Israel, including US citizens. There is a new Hamas victim not included in the clip. Her name is Islam Hejazy, she used to work as a Gaza program manager at HEAL Palestine, a charitable organization working to medically support the Gaza Strip. On September 26, 2024, just three days ago, Hamas terrorists killed Islam Hijazi after she refused to hand charity funds she collected over to the terror group. You can read more about this story at https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/gunmen-shoot-kill-aid-worker-gaza-charity-family-say-2024-09-27/. Islam Hejazy, a young mother of two small children, dared to stand up to an armed terrorist gang. UMBC should have enough courage to honor her and other terror victims' memories. For your convenience, Islam's picture is attached. With best regards, Jacob Kogan
