Dear President Ashby, After being made aware of the recent protests held at the UMBC campus, we are deeply troubled by the recent pro-Palestinian protest, which appears to contradict UMBC's mission statement of "dedication to cultural and ethnic diversity, social responsibility, and lifelong learning." The use of the chant 'from the river to the sea Palestine will be free' during the protest has raised significant concerns among the approximately 1000 Jewish students enrolled in UMBC, promoting a message that not only incites violence but also stands in stark contrast to the values of inclusivity and mutual respect that UMBC strives to uphold. It is evident that the protest has caused distress and discomfort within the Jewish campus community, who feel targeted and marginalized by the use of such inflammatory rhetoric. This is a clear deviation from the university's commitment to fostering a campus environment that embraces diversity and cultivates a culture of understanding and respect. In light of this, we urge you to thoroughly review the attached video of the protest to understand the gravity of the situation. We call upon you to take immediate and decisive action to address the concerns raised by the Jewish student community and ensure that UMBC remains a safe and inclusive space for all. This should involve revisiting the guidelines for peaceful demonstrations on campus and reinforcing the values of tolerance, respect, and responsible expression within the UMBC community. Moreover, we request the implementation of educational initiatives that promote constructive dialogue and cultural sensitivity, emphasizing the importance of peaceful coexistence and mutual understanding among diverse groups on campus. We remain confident in your commitment to upholding the core values of UMBC and trust that you will take the necessary steps to address these concerns in a timely and effective manner.
